SOUTHINGTON, CT — Most fairs are complete and, even, the Big E in Springfield, Mass., has run its course this year.

But it doesn't mean an end to the seasonal fun. In fact, in Southington, it's only just starting.

That's because, on Friday, Oct. 4, the 2024 Southington Apple Harvest Festival will transform the town's beloved green (75 Main St.) into a joyous Mecca of food, crafts, games and rides ... all paying homage to the beloved autumn fruit.

Festivities, as always, are stretched out over two weekends this year — Friday, Oct. 4, to Sunday, Oct. 6, and Friday, Oct. 11, to Sunday, Oct. 13.

Considered one of the oldest and best-attended festivals in New England, it draws more than 100,000 people during the course of the event.

"The festival is one of Connecticut's top tourist events held during the height of New England's beautiful fall foliage," wrote the Town of Southington, which organizes the event through a designated committee.

"Visitors will enjoy a jam-packed schedule of events, entertainment, activities, specialty foods, crafts and fun for all ages."

The parade will give folks one last chance to publicly honor retired Southington Town Manager Mark Sciota, who is the 2024 parade grand marshal.

Traffic impacts

But with massive municipal events come the acompanying traffic impacts, with the Southington Police Department on top of the situation.

The SPD this week issued a bulletin about road closures, parking and other issues folks driving to or through the area need to know.

Several roads in the area of the town green will be closed and parking will also be limited at various times of the event.

Those restrictions will be especially noticable during two of the biggest festival events, the Southington Apple Harvest Festival Parade Sunday, Oct. 6, and the fireworks show Saturday night, Aug. 5.
