Extreme Heat Alert Issued, Cooling Center Opens In Stamford

Temperatures are expected to climb into the 90s this week with high humidity.

STAMFORD, CT — With a heat advisory issued for Fairfield County, Stamford Interim Director of Health, Jody Bishop-Pullan, has advised Stamford residents and visitors to be aware of the high temperatures.

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted many of the community partners that typically volunteer to serve as Cooling Centers. Presently, the Stamford Government Center lobby remains open for cooling:

888 Washington Blvd. 1st floor lobby 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mon- Fri. The lobby will also be available on Saturday and Sunday.

Know the signs and symptoms of heat stroke. They include:

  • Body temperature greater than or equal to 105 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Mental confusion.
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Convulsions

Note: If you are experiencing these symptoms, dial 911 or visit a hospital emergency room.

Be Prepared for the Extreme Heat Conditions:

  • Increase fluid intake regardless of activity level.
  • Remain indoors in an air conditioned setting when possible.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
  • Limit outdoor activity and exercise.
  • Apply "UVA/UVB protection" sunscreen.

Although anyone can potentially be impacted by heat exhaustion, certain individuals are at greater risk than others. These include:

  • Infants and young children
  • People aged 65 or older
  • People who have a mental illness
  • Those who are physically ill, especially with heart disease or high blood pressure
