If you're looking for a fun way to expose your child to the world of dance this summer, Connecticut Ballet Center is offering a "Summer Intensive" program in August where students will be exposed to and have the chance to learn ballet, pilates, modern, jazz, character, flamenco, mime and more.
"It's the one time of year where are students can really delve into all types of dance since we are a primarily ballet-oriented school," director Brett Rapahel told Patch. "We recognize that not every student will grow up to be a ballet dancer—they might be meant to study another style."
Students ages eight to 18 —regardless of whether they attend Connecticut Ballet during the year or not—can sign up for a one or two-week course between August 5-16. Each day begins with a pilates class followed by ballet class, a lunch break and then a specialized class in the afternoon. A one-week course is $420 and a two-week course is $770.
Older students will also have the chance to practice partnering as well as pointe classes depending on their experience. Each student will be placed in a ballet class according to their skill level, but all students will attend specialized classes together.
"The kids who did it last year are still talking about it because they are exposed to styles that a lot of dancers don't see until they reach college," Rapahel said. "And we love teaching it because it's our chance to show them what the world of dance has to offer."
Both the students and parents appreciate the school's approach to learning. "There's no pressure to get it all right," Raphael said. "We strive to provide a fun, exciting and supportive experience."
And for those looking to get a head start on their summer of dance fun, Connecticut Ballet also offers six-week ballet mini sessions from June 24 to August 3. For more information, call 203-978-0771 or visit www.connecticutballet.com
