Located at 46 Southfield Ave. right on the water in the Harbor Point section of Stamford, The Crab Shell opened in 1989.
The dinner and lunch menus featured an array of seafood dishes, from appetizers to larger plates, as well as options for land lubbers like chicken, hamburgers and pasta.
Whether by boat, car, or foot, patrons routinely packed the restaurant especially in the summer months, when the dockside bar, The Shack, opened up and offered live music.
"Our mission is simple - we are dedicated to serving great food and a great experience - and we've been doing it for over 30 years!" the restaurant's website notes.
Customers and past employees flocked to social media Friday morning to pay tribute to the restaurant, which served as a summer staple for many in the area.
"Very sad to see this. Many great memories over the years. Best wishes for the Crab Shell team," one commenter said on Facebook.
"This is so sad to hear! Your seafood was amazing and hands down your venue has the BEST Summer waterfront vibes!! Will always remember the great memories made here Wishing you the very best on your next journey," another commenter posted.
Several mentioned The Crab Shell's lobster roll as a menu favorite, as well as the gorgonzola salad - with one person even asking for the recipe to the dressing.
