Stamford Mourns Death Of Veteran Active Firefighter

The veteran firefighter "demonstrated unwavering commitment, professionalism, and compassion to the department and the city," the SFD said.

STAMFORD, CT — Stamford is mourning the loss of longtime firefighter Herman Naring, who died on Nov. 16 after a battle with cancer, according to an announcement from the Stamford Fire Department. Naring was 10 days shy of his 64th birthday.

Naring served the city of Stamford for over 41 years, first as a volunteer firefighter in 1984 and then as a career firefighter beginning in 2003. He was most recently a part of Engine Co. 6, Group 3.

"Firefighter Naring demonstrated unwavering commitment, professionalism, and compassion to the department and the city," the SFD said in an announcement Monday. "The Stamford Fire Department extends our heartfelt condolences to the Naring family, friends, and his colleagues. We share in their grief and stand together as one united fire service family during this difficult time."

Mayor Caroline Simmons posted about Naring's death on Facebook.

"His commitment, professionalism, and compassion have made a lasting impact on the City of Stamford and on everyone who had the privilege of working with him," Simmons wrote. "My deepest condolences go out to the Naring family, and his friends and colleagues during this difficult time."

Naring is survived by his wife, daughter, son, granddaughter and sister, as well as many brothers-in-law and nieces and nephews, his obituary notes.

Naring will receive department honors with a wake scheduled for Nov. 19 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Boston Post Road, in Darien.

A funeral is scheduled for Nov. 20 at 11 a.m. at St. John's Episcopalian Church, 628 Main St., across from Central Fire Headquarters in Stamford.
