Local Runners in Boston for Marathon When Tragedy Struck

Two runners from East Lyme and one from Old Lyme were among the 27,000 people competing in the Boston Marathon when explosions near the finish line killed three people and injured scores more.

The shocking explosions near the finish line of the Boston Marathon yesterday continue to dominate the news today. CNN reports that three people died, including an 8-year-old boy, and about 150 people were being treated for injuries. At least 10 people had limbs amputated, CNN reports.

Two East Lyme residents, Brian S. Bronk, 45, and Colin M. Kane, 38, and one Old Lyme resident, Kali Cika, 19, of Old Lyme were listed by Boston Athletic Association (BAA) as among the almost 27,000 runners competing in the marathon. BAA gave result times for Cika and Bronk, but at least half of the runners were turned back before they could reach the finish line.

In a statement issued shortly after the bombings, Gov. Dannel Malloy said that Connecticut law enforcement and emergency responders were in close contact with Massachusetts and federal authorities and ready to help.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Massachusetts during this difficult time," Malloy said. "We will offer our full support to our neighboring state and assist in any way we can.”

The FBI is heading the investigation. According to CNN, law enforcement officials have recovered two undetonated explosive devices which they say could provide vital evidence in the investigation.
