Jury Awards $15.7 Million to Victims of 2007 Fatal Car Crash in East Lyme

Northeast Carriers, which owned the tanker truck involved in the multi-vehicle accident, was found liable.

On April 26, Claims Journal reports a jury awarded $15.7 million to survivors and to family members of people who died in a multiple vehicle crash on Interstate-95 in East Lyme on Nov. 2, 2007.

The crash involved a tanker truck carrying about 7,000 gallons of heating fuel, which careened over the median by the merge with Interstate-395 and collided head-on with traffic traveling southbound.

East Lyme resident 54-year-old Luann Dugas, Milford resident 33-year-old Fred Held and the truck driver, 51-year-old Peter Derry of Webster, Mass.,  were all killed in the accident. The victims and their families sued Northeast Carriers, which owned the truck involved.

The case was heard in Hartford Superior Court last week. After deliberating on Friday, the jury found Northeast Carriers was negligent and reckless.
