The Daily Five: New Businesses Coming to East Lyme, Old Lyme and Lyme; Flags at Half-Staff
Five things to know for East Lyme, Old Lyme, and Lyme on Wednesday, April 17, 2013

1. We'll see partly cloudy skies today with a high of 63 degrees, according to weather.com. Tonight should be mostly clear with a low of 43 degrees and just a 10 percent chance of rain.
2. Old Lyme Zoning Commission paved the way for a seasonal clam shack at the site of the old Cherrystone's Restaurant on Shore Road by granting a special permit for takeout food at its meeting last week.
The clam bar, which will offer takeout service and outdoor dining on a patio area, is the first of many additions and improvements that new owner, Big Green Outdoor LLC, has in mind for the restaurant.
The Zoning Commission approved site construction of the 28 by 36 square foot clam bar, parking lot renovations, landscaping, interior and exterior renovations to the restaurant with two entryways and two outside patios for dining. Service of alcohol as an accessory use to the restaurant was also approved.
3. If you're hungry for pizza in Lyme, you might have to wait a little longer to buy a slice in town. Lisa Bakoledis withdrew her application for a special permit to allow sales from an outdoor pizza truck on the property of Hadlyme Country Store. She's going to resubmit her application after making changes suggested by the Lyme Planning and Zoning Commission.
4. New London's Cake Lady has a new home in East Lyme. The store, which opened two weeks ago, is located at 190 Flanders Road next to Wild Birds Unlimited—although it's a little hard to spot it right now as the sign for the hair salon that used to occupy that space is still hanging out front.
Although there's no actual baking done on site, the store is a retail space for all the delectable cakes that are fresh baked daily in New London. Hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
5. Governor Dannel P. Malloy, following a proclamation from President Barack Obama, has ordered U.S. and Connecticut flags to fly at half-staff in honor of the victims of yesterday’s bombing at the Boston Marathon.
“I know I speak for everyone in Connecticut in saying that the victims and their families are in our hearts and thoughts today as they deal with the horrible aftermath of this senseless attack on an event whose beauty and rich tradition draws people from all over the world,” said Lieutenant Governor Nancy Wyman. “This was an assault on innocent people and an assault on our values, and we must respond with solidarity for all of those affected.”
Flags will remain at half staff until sunset on Saturday, April 20, 2013.
