The Daily Five: St. Patrick's Day Celebrations, Sound View Beach Passes and Parking, For Mischief Done!

Five things to know for East Lyme, Old Lyme, and Lyme on Monday, March 18, 2013.

1. This morning will be partly cloudy and skies will become overcast later this afternoon but in the interim, we should see some sun. It's not going to be warm, though. Weather.com is predicting a high temperature of just 37 degrees and an overnight low of 33 degrees and there's an 80 percent chance for rain and/or snow tonight.

2. Top o' the mornin' to you! St. Patrick's Day seems to be turning into St. Patrick's month, with parades every weekend and plenty of celebrations locally.

You'll find videos of Irish step dancing and New London Fire Department Pipes and Drums performances at The Black Sheep in Niantic on Patch today, plus a video of the parade in New London posted at 8 a.m., so you can live vicariously if you missed it.

If you're still in the mood to celebrate, however, Mystic's parade (and celebrations at The Black Sheep's sister pub, The Harp and Hound in Mystic) will be happening next weekend!

3. The Old Lyme Board of Selectmen will hold a special meeting today at 4:30 p.m. with the Wastewater Management Task Force and the firm of Woodard and Curran of Cheshire, to discuss and develop the Scope of Work and estimated costs for the study for the community septic system. The board is hoping that this will be a way to solve waste issues that stops short of installing sewers.

4. Old Lyme's Board of Selectmen will reconvene at 7:30 p.m. for its usual meeting. Tonight's agenda has a few items of interest for beach lovers, as the board will be discussing the cost of beach passes, reviewing the cost of private parking lot fees, and will be considering a request from the Pavilion at Sound View Beach for a waiver of the bus ordinance. Currently, town rules prohibit any bus traffic to the town's beach but the Pavilion operates a mini bus to give patrons rides to and from the popular watering hole in the summer.

5. Niantic author Jan Schenk Grosskopf posted the final installment of a four-part serialization of excerpts from her new historical novel "for Mischief done" on Sunday. Check it out! (If you're just catching onto this now, the good news is that you can read all four parts at once on Patch!)
