The Daily Five: Snow Daze And School Days, Millstone News, Antiques Appraisal, and St. Patrick's Day

Five things to know for East Lyme, Old Lyme, and Lyme on Friday, March 15, 2013.

1. We should see some sunshine today but it will become increasingly cloudy in the afternoon and there's a 30 percent chance of rain and ultimately snow tonight. Weather.com is predicting a high temperature of 43 degrees and an overnight low of 33 degrees.

2. The March snow day prompted School District 18 to once again revise its calendar. Barring any more snow storms, the Lyme-Old Lyme School District's last day will be June 25, with half-days for students but full days for staff on June 24 and 25. The next day off for students will be Good Friday, March 29.

3. Dominion Resources Inc, owners of Millstone Power Station, has agreed to sell three power plants in unregulated markets, according to the Richmond Times.

According to the article, Dominion is looking to get out of unregulated markets, and is selling two coal plants and a natural gas-burning plant in unregulated markets. Connecticut also has an unregulated electricity market, a market Dominion officials are calling riskier.

"For us, the theme here is the de-risking of the company and the transition to a more regulated earnings mix," said Fred G. Wood III, senior vice president for financial management with the company's Dominion Generation operating unit, according to the article.

Despite the sale, Dominion said it is not looking to sell Millstone Power Station. The article quotes Wood as saying that Millstone, along with two other plants Dominion owns in unregulated markets, are well-positioned for profitability because of their locations and generation types.

4. If you're a fan of Antiques Roadshow, then this is one event you won't want to miss. Vintage! is Old Lyme Historical Society’s antiques appraisal event that offers a local opportunity to have all your precious collectibles appraised. All proceeds from this popular fundraiser will benefit the Historical Society's scholarship fund. The event will take place on Sunday, March 17 between 1:00 and 5:00 PM at the Old Lyme Town Hall.

5. Looking for ways to celebrate St. Patrick's Day? There's no shortage of ways to do it this weekend, starting on Saturday morning with the O'Niantic 5K and Wee Mile. Clan O'Cleary will be playing Irish music at The Black Sheep in Niantic on Saturday night. The big day, of course, is Sunday when New London holds its Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade. The Black Sheep has tons of special events planned and if you're looking to fill up on all-you-can-eat corned beef and cabbage, Flanders Fish Market and Restaurant is the place for that!
