The Daily Five: Death and Taxes, Budget Hearing, Soup and Drugs

Five things to know for East Lyme, Old Lyme, and Lyme on Thursday, April 25, 2013.

1. Finally, the forecast is good. Weather.com is predicting a partly cloudy day (which if you're a glass half-full sort of person means it's mostly sunny) with a high temperature of 62 degrees. There's just a 20 percent chance of rain during the day and no chance of rain tonight. This evening is predicted to be clear with a high temperature of 40 degrees,

2. Who says death and taxes are unavoidable? Well, death is, obviously, but if you're interested in finding out how to dodge the taxman even after you've "bought the farm," then Probate Judge Jeff McNamara and Elizabeth Moore of the Connecticut Farmland Trust have a seminar for you.

The two will present a free seminar titled, "Avoid Paying Taxes (legally): Estate Planning for Farmers & Landowners" at East Lyme Community Center on Society Road in East Lyme at 7 p.m. tonight. Call (860) 437-8771 for more information.

3. East Lyme Board of Finance will hold a Public Hearing tonight on the town's proposed budget for fiscal year 2013-2014. If you have thoughts or feelings about the budget for either the town or the school district, now's the time to share them. The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at East Lyme High School.

4. Psst! Got Drugs? Want to get rid of them? April 27 is drug take-back day. The towns of East Lyme, Old Lyme, and Lyme are all participating in this event. You can drop off old or unused prescription drugs at East Lyme Police Station lobby on Main Street, Niantic, or at Old Lyme Fire House on Lyme Street in Old Lyme from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

5. While you're thinking about dropping things off at the Fire House, Old Lyme Fire Station and Niantic Fire Station are both participating in a food drive for the Shoreline Soup Kitchens and Pantries on April 27 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Most needed items include canned meats, canned fruits and vegetables, peanut butter, canned or boxed meals such as chili or soup, pasta, rice, and cereal.
