The Daily Five: Happy Valentine's Day! Here's How You Can Share The Love Today!

Five things to know for East Lyme, Old Lyme, and Lyme on Thursday, February 14, 2013.

1. This morning's commute could be a slippery affair. Weather.com predicted comparatively low accumulations of just one to three inches of snow tops overnight but with early morning temperatures below freezing, drive carefully.

By 7 a.m. temperatures should be on the rise and the rest of the day should be sunny and clear, with a high temperature of 42 degrees and an overnight low of 34 degrees.

2. Happy Valentine's Day! I know some people poo-poo this holiday as a Hallmark marketing ploy but it actually has some historical roots. Besides, if you're a romantic at heart, why wouldn't you want to celebrate a day dedicated to love?

Going out to dinner seems to be a popular way to spend the evening, and a number of local restaurants are offering special Valentine's Day menus. If you're planning to stay home and cook for the love of your life (and the way to the heart, they say, is through the stomach) here are a few heart-healthy recipies you might want to try.

If you find yourself scrambling at the last minute for some way to show your nearest and dearest how much you care, don't worry, there's an App for that! And if you find yourself suffering from the Valentine's Day blues, here are some tips to help you survive the day.

3. Most of us have been emotionally blindsided by love at some point, but love should never hurt. Today, Governor Malloy and First Lady Cathy Malloy will speak at the One Billion Rising rally in Hartford, which is part of a global event calling on one billion women and allies to demand an end to violence against women. The event is hosted by the Permanent Commission on the Status of Women, Connecticut Sexual Assault Crisis Services, Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and Planned Parenthood.

4. Old Lyme is continuing the Herculean task of shifting all the snow piled high along the streets. The town's focus yesterday and today is to truck it away from Lyme Street and Ferry Road, but snow plows were out again last night as snow fell yet again. Be careful navigating around all these hazards and watch out for black ice again this morning and possible flooding again in some low-lying roads when the sun comes out.

5. Jansky's scheduled garbage pickups in Lyme, which were suspended due to the snow storm, resumed on Tuesday and are back on track with the usual Thursday collection today. People who would have put their trash out on Saturday, February 9, can put it out for pickup this Saturday. It's not easy to find a place to put it with so many snow banks, but try not to put trash cans on the road, please.
