The Daily Five: Blight Continues, School Board Sets Budget Referendum, GMOs Up For Debate, And Breakfast Buddies
Five things to know for East Lyme, Old Lyme, and Lyme on Tuesday, April 2, 2013.

1. Today will be mostly sunny and tonight mostly clear. Weather.com is predicting just a few clouds this afternoon and only a 10 percent chance of rain. Temperatures won't be quiet as warm as they were yesterday, however, with winds blowing from the west. The high temperature is expected to reach 43 degrees and with overnight lows of 30 degrees.
2. Old Lyme's Anti-Blight Committee is officially dead, long live the anti-blight committee. After finding itself unable to arrive at consensus when it came time to officially recommend an anti-blight ordinance to the Old Lyme Board of Selectmen, the anti-blight committee has effectively thrown in the towel.

But as one of the main reasons the committee members were unable to cast that final vote stemmed from scheduling conflicts that made it difficult for all members to find time to meet, Old Lyme Board of Selectmen voted last night to disband the committee and reform a new one. The Board is looking for new recruits to take up the issue so, if you're interested, now's the time to step up.
3. Old Lyme Board of Selectmen met earlier than usual yesterday to avoid a scheduling conflict with the Lyme-Old Lyme Board of Education's budget hearing, which was held at 7:30 p.m. However, few members of the public actually showed up to the Board of Ed's forum (I counted about three).

Hearing no objections, the Board moved to schedule a final district budget meeting for May 6 at 7:30 p.m. at the Lyme-Old Lyme Middle School Auditorium. The budget referendum will be held on May 7 from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Old Lyme's firehouses. Hopefully, more people will show up when it's time to vote on the budget.
4. The State Legislature is considering a bill that would require all genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or food that contains them to be labeled. If you want to from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Ledyard High School as part of the campaign urging passage of this bill.
5. Niantic Center School PTA is providing two opportunities to have breakfast with your elementary school pals this week. Kids can invite a friend to be their "breakfast buddy" today and Wednesday from 8 to 9 a.m. in the school's cafeteria. (I'll be there Wednesday, having breakfast with my friend Fiona!) If you'd like to donate baked goods for the occasion, you can drop them off at the Nurse's Office or being them directly to the event.
