The Daily Five: Spring Break, Last Day of School, The State of East Lyme, And Hazardous Waste

Five things to know for East Lyme, Old Lyme, and Lyme on Monday, April 15, 2013.

1. Today will be mostly sunny with a high of 57 degrees and an overnight low of 42 degrees. According to weather.com, there's a 20 percent chance of rain this evening as a few more clouds roll in.

2. Lyme-Old Lyme Schools and East Lyme schools are on spring break this week. Students at Lyme-Old Lyme High School moved out of the portable classrooms and into the new school building a couple of weeks ago but by the time they return from this week-long vacation, the last of the portable classrooms should be gone for good.

3. East Lyme Board of Education has revised the school calendar to set the date for the last day of school. Graduation for East Lyme High School Seniors will be held at 6 p.m. on June 20. The last day of school for all other students will be June 21, which will be a half day. Thanks to the many storm-related closings this past school year, that's a whole 10 days later than the original end date of June 11.

4. The annual "State of East Lyme" breakfast hosted by the Chamber of Commerce on Friday drew a good crowd of people to Town Hall who were eager to hear from East Lyme First Selectman Paul Formica and East Lyme School Superintendent James Lombardo.

Formica focussed on new and upcoming developments, including the opening of the expanded beach at Cini Park and the Gateway project, which is kicking back into gear after a long hiatus.

Superintendent Lombardo offered an update on school security and renewed his pledge to starting full-day kindergarten, despite the Board of Finance's decision to cut $650,000 from the school budget.

If you didn't make it to that meeting, the town of East Lyme's website promises a second breakfast from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. this Thursday, April 18, at Main Street Grille in Niantic.

Formica is again slated to give a status report but this event is billed as a "Merchants' Meeting" hosted by Niantic Main Street. The event is free and open to the public. To register for the event, email nianticmainstreet@sbcglobal.net  or call (860) 739-2550 by today, April 15.

5. The town of Lyme’s waste oil, antifreeze and battery recycling site has been relocated from the Town Garage to the town landfill on Brush Hill Road. The landfill is open Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m to noon and 1 p.m to 4 p.m. (excluding holidays, when the landfill is closed.)

Household hazardous waste collections are set to resume on select Saturdays at 5 Dump Road in Essex from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., although the first drop off opportunity will be April 20 from the satellite collection site in Clinton. Residents of Old Lyme and Lyme can drop off household hazardous waste at the satellite collection site at Clinton Public Works Garage, 117 Nod Road.
