The Daily Five: York Correctional Escapees Caught in Hartford, And Local Emergency Services Need Help

Five things to know for East Lyme, Old Lyme, and Lyme on Monday, January 7, 2013

1. Today will be sunny with a high temperature of 40 degrees, according to weather.com. Tonight will be cold and clear, with a low temperature of 31 degrees.

2. In case you missed it, two inmates broke out (make that walked out) of the minimum security area of York Correctional Institution in Niantic on Saturday evening but they weren't on the lam for long. Melissa Riley, 30, and Jessica Rivera, 34, were both located on New Britain Avenue in Hartford at 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, just 25 hours after making their escape.

3. Old Lyme's Board of Selectmen meets tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Old Lyme Town Hall. One piece of old business that has popped up on the agenda in a slightly more pressing way since the first snow is a request from White Sands Beach Association that the town plow more than just the entrance to the beach community.

The board is also slated to schedule the Annual Town Meeting for January 28. One of the items up for consideration at that meeting is a request from the town's police and fire departments to extend the radio communications tower and upgrade the radios to improve communications between police, fire, public works, and possibly schools in an emergency.

4. The Lyme Ambulance Association is looking for volunteers to become Emergency Medical technicians, Emergency Medical Responders or ambulance drivers. A first aid or medical background is not required. Training for new recruits will begin this month. Once trained and qualified, new members will become part of the team that responds to medical emergencies in Lyme and in mutual aid towns. To find out more, go to the Lyme Ambulance web site

5. If you live in East Lyme, this is the week to put out your Christmas tree. The town will be picking up trees on regularly scheduled garbage collection days this week. Trees must be placed at the curbside by 7 a.m., free of all trimmings and not bagged. You can also drop off Christmas trees at the transfer station free of charge.
