The Future of East Lyme Elementary Schools

Should East Lyme have three, two, or one elementary schools? That's a topic for discussion tonight at East Lyme High School.

East Lyme's elementary schools are due for a major overhaul. All of the elementary school buildings are aging and in need of renovations. At the same time, the town's population is changing and the number of students enrolled at the elementary level has been declining—and that trend is projected to continue.

Tonight, the East Lyme School District is holding a forum on the future of the town's three elementary schools. Should all three be renovated or does it make financial sense to redo just two: Lillie B. Haynes and Flanders? Are the days of Niantic Center School numbered? Or would the town be better off demolishing all three buildings and replacing them with one brand new school to serve the entire town?

The school's Vision Committee has pondered the merits of all these proposals but nothing has been decided yet. Tonight, there will be a presentation of the research and steps taken to date and a discussion of what could be ahead.

This public forum will be held at East Lyme High School Auditorium at 6:30 p.m.
