Three East Lyme Students Stand Out As Leaders
Daniel Gage, Kaley Roberts received Connecticut Association of Boards of Education Leadership Awards; Unni Kurumbail wins Connecticut Association of Schools Governor's Scholar Award.
East Lyme High School's Graduation Ceremony is Thursday, so it seems like a good time to reflect back on some of the students' accomplishments.
Each year the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education (CABE) recognizes students whose leadership abilities make them stand out from the crowd.
At East Lyme High School, those students are Kaley Roberts and Daniel Gage, two seniors whose extracurricular activities make you wonder how they ever find time to study—yet they do, and are outstanding scholars too.
Daniel Gage
Daniel Gage is ranked in the top 10 percent of his class, is a member of the National Honors Society and of the Student Senate and the full senate. He is a member of Peers Reaching Out, a group of students chosen by teachers for their maturity, reliability, good character, and leadership, which provides extra support for fellow students. Gage also plays sports nearly all year round as an athlete on the cross country, basketball and track teams.
Gage intends to go on to pursue a degree in biology and ultimately attend medical school.
Kaley Roberts
Kaley Roberts is arguably one of the best known students in East Lyme High School. She's an editor of the Viking Saga and hosts most of the holiday telethons which help raise awareness of and money for Niantic Children's Museum and Care and Share.
It's perhaps not a big surprise to learn that she hopes to go on to a career in television. She's received academic awards in journalism, English, French, Early Bird Physical Education, and Digital Filmmaking, and is a recipient of the George Eastman Young Leader's Award and the Computing Medal Award. And she's a member of the National Honors Society.
Roberts is involved in Big Brothers and Big Sisters, ELHS Drama Club, and handles public relations for East Lyme Regional Theater Group. She's Vice President of the Student Senate and is Student Representative to the Board of Education.
Unni Kurumbail
Unni Kurumbail is this year's recipient of the Connecticut Association of Schools Governor's Scholar Award. Not only is he enrolled in some of the toughest courses, he's also one of the best students in them. This 11th grader took four advanced placement and four honors level courses this year.
Kurumbail is also involved in an impressive number of extra curricular activities too. He participated in the Model UN and Model Congress, is a writer for the Viking Saga, is on the school tennis team and involved in the East Lyme Parks and Recreation's Basketball League.
He is also a member of the East Lyme High School Orchestra, which was selected to perform at the Eastern Region Music Festival, the All-State Music Festival and the New England Music Festival this year.
Congratulations to all!
