What Goes Up, Must Come Down
But when the Niantic River Bridge refused to close properly during rush hour yesterday, traffic backed up fast.

Every now and again, the Niantic River Bridge gets stuck. And while it doesn't happen often, its refusal to close completely in the down position yesterday couldn't have happened at a worst time.
The bridge jammed shortly after 4 p.m., just as the work day was ending at Millstone Nuclear Power and state and municipal employees were headed home. And though the bridge was only stuck for about 15 to 20 minutes, traffic backed up fast along Route 156 in both directions.
DOT workers were able to fix the problem relatively quickly. By the time East Lyme Police got there to redirect traffic, the bridge was back in working order again. But in case you were curious, that was the reason for all the traffic on Monday.
