TOLLAND, CT — A driver trying to avoid a traffic jam created his own congestion after backing into an Interstate 84 traffic sign, state police said.

According to a state police crash report, at abut 8 p.m. on Nov. 20, a 2018 Volkswagen Golf with a 63-year-old Ashland, MA, man behind the wheel was heading east on Tolland Stage Road and began to turn left onto the Exit 69, Interstate 84 eastbound on-ramp.

The driver saw that traffic was built-up and began backing up in an effort to leave the ramp, only to bang into a Department of Transportation sign in the process.
