At 16, Shelton resident Joe Laucella says he was hanging out with a questionable crowd when he decided to try becoming an EMT.
But soon Laucella fell for the EMS path. After 20 years as an EMT in Shelton, the St. Joseph High School (Trumbull) alumnus became the executive director of Trumbull EMS.
"When I was 16 I didn't know what I wanted to do," he said. Afterward, he realized that "I love helping people and giving back to the community."
So Laucella is now urging high school and college students this summer to attend Trumbull EMS' training course starting June 25.
The course runs through the summer from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Thursday.
"It is an excellent class for any college and high school student, a great opportunity to find direction," Laucella said.
Volunteering as an EMT will help students who want to have a career in medicine and those who need to perform volunteer hours. It also provides training that can lead to a career and that costs less than other schools' tuition, Laucella said.
Applicants must be 16 by start of class. Testing fees after course are not included.
