Avoid Ponds With Less Than 3 Inches Of Ice, Trumbull Police Warn

"Several surrounding towns had people fall through the ice this weekend," authorities said.

TRUMBULL, CT — Though the weather has been cold in recent days, Trumbull police are warning residents to avoid venturing onto frozen ponds and lakes, because the ice may not be strong enough.

"The recent cold weather and snow has caused several ponds and lakes in town to skim over with ice," police wrote on Facebook. "This ice is less than an inch thick and very dangerous. Several surrounding towns had people fall through the ice this weekend."

Typically, ice needs to be more than 3 inches thick to support people, and such thickness is not easily achieved with only a couple of days of cold weather.

"All residents should also be reminded of the rule that there is no skating on any bodies of water within any town park," Trumbull police said. "If you do witness an animal or person fall through the ice DO NOT attempt to try to get them. Call 911 immediately. Officers are equipped and trained with special suits to deal with this type of incident.

"Remember the ice is weak, and you can suffer the same fate."
