Cops: Trumbull Man Involved in Stolen Car Crash, Grandmother Charged Too

The suspect's grandmother allegedly hid him in her car, Trumbull police said.

One of two people allegedly spotted in a reportedly stolen pick up truck Monday was arrested Tuesday.

Trumbull Police said an officer on patrol saw a man who was wanted on a sixth-degree larceny warrant sitting in a white Ford pick-up truck.

When officers tried to stop the truck, the driver accelerated on Old Town Road and ran through two stop signs before losing control and hitting a telephone pole while turning onto Frenchtown Road, police said.

The vehicle sustained minor damage, and both eluded capture at first, despite the help of Bridgeport and State Police dogs.

But one of the suspects, Ean Szalan, 22, of Moorland Road, Trumbull, was found shortly thereafter in the back seat of his grandmother’s car as she was pulling into her driveway.

"It was learned that Szalan had called his grandmother for a ride and she hid him in the back of her vehicle to take him home," said Trumbull Deputy Police Chief Michael Harry.

"The second subject who fled is known and the investigation is still in progress with an arrest warrant due shortly.  The pickup truck was later determined to have been stolen out of Bridgeport on Aug. 3," he said.

Ean Szalan was charged with Interfering with an Officer and held on a $1,000 bond. The larceny warrant was also served with an additional $1,000 bond.

Anna Szalan 72, of Moorland Road, Trumbull, was issued a Summons for interfering and released at the scene, police said.

Szalan appeared Tuesday in Bridgeport Superior Court.
