Trumbull High School teacher Eric August spent a short time as a lawyer before becoming a teacher more than six years ago, but questioned his decision.
Today, the move is paying off for him as he vies for the Connecticut Teacher of the Year Honor. He's taught at THS for six years and is one of four finalists.
August, of Stratford, has improved the performance of the THS Mock Trial Team in addition to earning the praise of the school district, which feted him on Tuesday before the Board of Education.
After watching August address his fellow teachers Aug. 27, Schools Supt. Gary Cialfi said, "It was a moment to behold."
He said August deserved to be the ambassador of Trumbull's teachers in the Teacher of the Year competition.
August told the board he sometimes questioned his move from law to teaching. "After yesterday, I'll never have that thought again," he said.
The judges interviewed and observed August earlier this week. The state Education commissioner will announce the 2014 Connecticut Teacher of the Year at a press conference at the teacher’s school.
August is working on his master's degree in education, and loves playing and watching baseball. He is the THS varsity baseball pitching coach and also pitching coach for the Connecticut Blue Jays, a Minor League team.
He is married with two children.
