Harriet Polansky Supported for Permanent Stern Village Director

Polansky started Feb. 19 as Acting Interim Executive Director. The Trumbull Housing Authority is responsible for the search for a permanent replacement.

First Selectman Tim Herbst and a group of about 50 Stern Village residents on Thursday supported Harriet Polansky's performance so far as interim acting executive director.

Polansky received glowing reviews from Herbst and several residents. Herbst also received a petition from residents endorsing Polansky for the permanent job.

"She is caring, honest and concerned about the tenants of the village. She has even given us her cell number and email address to use to contact her if needed. Her actions during the past few snowstorms shows us that she is making the effort to initiate much-needed changes," the petition states. "There are individuals who have even seen her on the grounds during the snowstorms using a snow shovel."

Herbst added, "The proof is in the pudding. Never confuse efforts with results," he said.

Polansky was appointed after former 12-year Executive Director Harry Wise was released from his contract by the Trumbull Housing Authority. In late December 2012, Herbst appointed new board members after the current ones either resigned or were not reappointed.

The THA has not started a search yet but residents have been promised that they will be able to vet all the candidates for executive director.

Since Polansky came in, she has been working on many different issues in the complex, which is subsidized and serves seniors and the disabled. The list includes more efficient appliances (because the village has electric heat), contracts with telephone and cable companies and emergency management.

Polansky also reflected on her month in the job.

"This is my second home. I love you guys. You have been wonderful," she said. "I can't do it alone. I appreciate your suggestions, your support."

Earlier this year, residents also spoke fondly of Wise. He was let go after accusations he mishandled the emergency and relief efforts during and after Hurricane Sandy in late October 2012.

He was also accused of not implementing an emergency management plan.

A director search could take several months.
