TRUMBULL, CT — Despite plans to close 150 of its stores over the next few years, Macy's and town officials have confirmed the company plans to continue operating its Trumbull Mall location.

In a statement sent to Patch, Macy's confirmed the Trumbull department store will remain open.

"Our new strategy is designed to return Macy's, Inc. to profitable growth and enhance the customer experience," a Macy's spokesperson said. "We intend to close approximately 150 Macy's stores over the next three years. This allows us to focus our investments and resources on Macy's go-forward locations including full line, furniture and current off-mall locations and Bloomie's, Bloomingdale's The Outlet and Bluemercury stores."

Director of Economic and Community Development Rina Bakalar also confirmed Thursday the Macy's store at the mall will not be closing.

"They recently renewed their lease," Bakalar said. "They brought in a new manager in October 2023 who is doing a good job improving the store. First Selectman [Vicki] Tesoro and I have met with him...they are improving their inventory and the store performance is trending upward."

Bakalar also noted the continued presence of Macy's, the opening of which dates back to the 1990's, is good for the mall and area shoppers as they are one of only two full-service department stores remaining in the greater Bridgeport area. The other is JCPenney, also located at the mall.

In February, Macy's announced plans to close 150 of what it considers to be "underperforming" stores amid slipping sales. At the time of the announcement, it was unclear if any stores in Connecticut would be effected.

The iconic department store chain plans to close 50 of the targeted stores by the end of 2024, and another 100 over the next few years, according to the announcement. By 2026, Macy's will have 350 stores, the company said.

Aside from Trumbull, Macy's also operates Connecticut locations in Stamford, Milford, Danbury, Manchester and Farmington/West Hartford.
