The driver, identified as Nathaniel Earl, 44, of Derby, pulled over to the right shoulder in the area of exit 6 in Trumbull, state police said.

While speaking with Earl, the trooper noticed "clear signs of impairment, to include bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and the odor of alcoholic beverage coming from within the vehicle," according to state police.

Earl was then asked to submit to standardized field sobriety testing, which he did not perform to standard, according to state police.

Earl was charged with reckless driving and illegal operation of a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol/drugs.

According to state police, chemical testing revealed Earl had a blood alcohol content of more than twice the legal limit.

He was later released on a $500 bond and is scheduled to appear in court later this month, state police said.
