Nearly 200 Nursing Home Residents Evacuated In Trumbull Due To Water Issue: Town

Town officials said about 187 residents were evacuated from a Trumbull nursing home due to a water issue reported at the facility.

TRUMBULL, CT — Nearly 200 residents were evacuated from a Trumbull nursing home late Wednesday night into early Thursday morning due to a water issue reported at the facility, according to town officials.

In a news release posted to the town website, officials said the state Department of Public Health informed the town of a water issue at the Genesis St. Joseph's Center, located at 6448 Main Street, on Wednesday.

In response, town officials worked closely with the DPH to activate a "long-term care emergency plan" and evacuate approximately 187 patients to skilled nursing facilities across the state.

DPH and the state Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, along with Trumbull EMS, emergency management, fire and police, as well as over two dozen EMS agencies and wheelchair livery services from around the state, began the process of evacuating and transporting the patients around 11 p.m.

By 7:45 a.m., approximately 66 patients had been safely taken by ambulance, wheelchair vans or livery services to 23 different skilled nursing facilities. Approximately 50 additional patients were transported to other facilities by 8:30 a.m., officials said.

All residents were safely evacuated from the facility by 10:42 a.m., according to town officials.

"The town of Trumbull extends it sincere thanks to the numerous EMS agencies that helped in the relocation of nearly 200 residents," officials said in a news release.

The town also thanked Trumbull police, EMS and emergency management, as well as the Long Hill Fire Department, "for their dedication to the safe relocation of the residents at St Joseph's Center."

Town officials also noted they do not yet have a specific timeline for when the water issue at Genesis St. Joseph's Center will be resolved or when residents will be able to return to the facility.

"Officials assure the public that all residents are safe, comfortable and being well cared for during this process," town officials said.

"The Town of Trumbull and state agencies continue to work together to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents affected by this situation," town officials said. "The State of CT Department of Public Health is the regulatory authority regarding nursing homes. Trumbull will continue to work with the state agencies in this situation."

Town officials also noted Teresian Towers and Carmel Ridge were not impacted by the water issue.
