Police: Trumbull Threatening Suspect Had No Guns

James Patrick Ryan, who is scheduled to appear in Bridgeport Superior Court Jan. 28 for allegedly threatening to shoot at Cooperative Education Services, had no guns, police said Tuesday.

Police said that Ryan, of Stratford, made the threat as he left the building Jan. 18. He was arrested the same day. He was a student there at the time but was angry that he was asked to leave, police said.

CES is a 30-year-old program catering to students up to and including 21 years old, said Executive Director Evan Pitkoff. He said he could not comment on specific students, but added that Ryan was allowed to be there that day. No students were in danger, he added.

"We have a secure system," he said.

Before he made the threat, Ryan had been asked not return to the school, police said.

CES educates students from around southern Connecticut who perform better than they would in a mainstream educational setting, according to Pitkoff.

There are 275 students in the special education program. The school also offers all sorts of qualified personnel, including, nurses, social workers, occupational therapists and psychologists, the director said.
