Police Warn Residents Of Scammers Pretending To Be Trumbull Officers

TRUMBULL, CT — Police warn residents to remain vigilant in light of recent scam calls in which the scammer pretends to be a Trumbull police officer.

In a news release, police said several residents received fraudulent phone calls Tuesday from scammers using the names of real officers in an attempt to scam them out of money.

Some of these fraudulent calls were made by scammers who claimed to be members of the Trumbull "sheriff's" department, which police emphasized does not exist.

"Law enforcement does not request money, gift cards, or anything to render payment for fines, or to prevent someone from being arrested," police said in a news release. "Law enforcement does not threaten to arrest people, or increase any fines, if money is not paid."

Anyone who receives any suspicious calls, texts, emails or any other form of communication is asked to try to obtain a title, name, telephone number, address, or any other detailed information from the caller or sender that could possibly be followed up on, police said.

"Do not make any payments or provide any personal information to anyone that you do not know or who reached out to initiate contact with you," police said. "After contact is made with you, call the police to question the validity of the request or to report the fraudulent activity."
