Robert Leska of Trumbull had a girlfriend and wanted to get married. But he joined the U.S. Army and went to Vietnam, much like other young men in 1968.
"On May 6, 1968, I learned my childhood friend Bob Leska was killed in action," recalled former first selectman Ray Baldwin Jr. on Monday at Trumbull's Vietnam memorial on White Plains Road. Baldwin is also a Vietnam veteran.
Leska is the only graduate of St. Joseph High School to be killed in action, and a plaque has been placed in his name at the school.
In all, six Trumbull residents were killed in Vietnam, Baldwin said.
"Not a day has gone by that I haven't thought about Bob Leska," he added. "Let us honor their memory. Let us honor their service. Let us honor their sacrifice."
