Trumbull Police Offer Bicycle Safety Tips For Residents

Police have offered residents a list of bicycle safety tips to keep in mind when riding in Trumbull or out of town.

TRUMBULL, CT — In an effort to make sure all bicyclists in Trumbull ride safely, police have offered residents a list of bicycle safety tips to keep in mind when riding in or out of town.

In a Facebook post, police said they recommend residents follow these safety tips to ensure an enjoyable and safe riding experience:

• Keep your bike in good working condition; be sure tires are properly inflated, brakes work and the chain is well oiled.
• Make sure your bike is adjusted to fit you.
• Wear a bike helmet at all times.
• When riding in a group, always ride in single file when on the street.
• Always yield to pedestrians, stop at red lights and be especially careful at intersections.
• Slow down and check traffic at all corners and intersections.
• Walk the bike across intersections/streets.
• Keep both hands on the handle bars except when indicating turn signals.
• Know your signals and use them.
• Use dedicated bike lanes and stay off of the sidewalks.
• Ride with the flow of traffic – Never ride against traffic.
• Have a headlight on your bike when riding at night, as well as, rear and wheel reflectors.
• Dress weather appropriate and wear light colored and/or reflective clothing while riding.
• Only one person should be on single rider bike.
• Do not carry packages or bundles when riding.
• Limit your distractions; do not wear headphones, talk on phones or text while riding.
• Be aware of your surroundings and watch for hazards.
• Obey the law and make sure you know the rules beforehand.

Police also noted special care should be given to bike riders under 12 years old, as they are often not mature enough to make decisions to safely ride on their own, especially on the street.

"It is strongly recommend these young bike riders be accompanied by an adult or older sibling," police said on Facebook.
