TRUMBULL, CT — Trumbull police recently swore in three new officers, bringing the town's total police force to nearly 80 officers.

In a Facebook post announcing the news, police said John Vitone, Jalen Elliott and Joseph Samonek were sworn in April 2 and began their training for the department Friday.

According to the department, the three new recruits will enter the Connecticut Police Academy in Meriden to begin a six-month training curriculum.

The three new hires now bring the town's total police force to 76 officers, although the department noted that number is still six short of the authorized strength of 82.

"Recent retirements and resignations of officers over the last few years have made staffing difficult," police said on Facebook, "but improvements are expected following the restoration of the pension retirement program that the town approved late last year."
