Trumbull Resident, SCSU Student, Dies At 24 After Long Cancer Battle
The student was able to complete his final requirements for his degree earlier this semester, according to SCSU officials.
TRUMBULL, CT — The Southern Connecticut State University community is mourning the death of student Josh Cappello, a senior history major from Trumbull.
Cappello, 24, died Feb. 27 after a long battle with cancer, according to his obituary.
In an email sent to the SCSU community, officials said that with support from his advisor and other Southern faculty and staff, Cappello was able to complete his final requirements for his degree earlier this semester.

“Josh was a dedicated and insightful student who was eager to learn,” said Steven Judd, history professor and Cappello’s advisor. “Despite his medical challenges, he was always optimistic, kind, and focused, working diligently to complete his degree.”
Cappello also minored in religious studies, and while at Southern he “developed a passion for Middle Eastern History, reading the works of the 13th century poet Rumi and the contemporary author A. Helwa, among others,” according to the email. “He also zealously studied the Arabic language.”

“His devotion and determination were inspiring,” Judd said. “He will be sorely missed.”
Capello was also an avid basketball and baseball player in his youth, and went on to play three years of basketball at Trumbull High School, along with running track and cross country, according to his obituary.
Capello was also a strong advocate for brain tumor research, and traveled to Washington, D.C. to speak in front of Congress at the annual "Head to the Hill" event, according to the obituary.
“Josh will always be remembered for his thirst for knowledge, love of animals, incredible smile, dedication to his family, and his unwavering commitment to furthering brain tumor research,” his obituary reads.
