TRUMBULL, CT — Police determined "no threat existed" after receiving a report Wednesday afternoon of a man with a gun outside St. Joseph High School in Trumbull.

Police said on Facebook around 2 p.m. they had received what they believed to be a swatting call at St. Joseph High School and the school had been placed on lockdown "out of an abundance of caution" as officers checked the building.

Police also emphasized there was no immediate threat to students or the public but asked residents to stay away from the area until officers had completed their search.

In an update around 2:30 p.m., police said they had received a call reporting a man with a gun was outside the school.

Officers searched the area but did not find an armed person. After searching the school building, they determined no threat existed, according to police.

The school was dismissed around 2:30 p.m., and officers were standing by as students left the building, according to police.

According to police, "swatting" is the action or practice of making a prank call to emergency services in an attempt to bring about the dispatch of a large number of armed police officers to a particular address.
