"We went into quite a few classrooms and were able to welcome many of our students back to school," Semmel said. "I had a chance to get into many of our school cafeterias, and the teams were hard at work preparing healthy lunches for our students."
Police Lt. Brian Falkenstein noted officers did not encounter any issues regarding traffic, nor with any students, parents or faculty during their return to school Tuesday.
Board of Education Chair Lucinda Timpanelli said the schools she visited with Semmel and other board members were highly energized, as was the entire first day back to classes.
"We all enjoyed visiting with our students and staff members," Timpanelli said to Patch. "It's always a pleasure to interact with our school community."
Board of Education Secretary Lisa Nuland also said Tuesday was a wonderful day back for students.
"I honestly don't remember a more calm and peaceful first day," Nuland said to Patch. "The teachers are excited and the students looked happy. We are so excited about some new curriculum this year. I can't wait to see them soar."
Classes will be in session for the remainder of the week at Trumbull schools before students are off for Labor Day on Monday, according to the district's 2025-2026 calendar.
"All in all we had a great day and are looking forward to [Wednesday]," Semmel said.
