With the loss of several independent Trumbull Center businesses recently, one of the few remaining in Trumbull Center is Harold Hochberg Jewelers, making it one of the oldest businesses in town.
Founded in 1916 in Bridgeport, the business spans four generations of the Hochberg (pronounced “Hockberg”) family. It moved to Trumbull, 945 White Plains Road, in 1974.
The two current owners are brothers David and Marshall Hochberg. Harold was David’s and Marshall’s father.

David Hochberg worked at the store in high school but later went to work at a corporation. He took over the business in 1983 when his father wanted to retire.
“My brother, he’s been in the business since he was 14 years old,” said David Hochberg.

Hochberg estimated that there are probably less than 300 independent jewelers left in Connecticut. He credits the store’s continued success to clientele from its earlier days and their relatives who still patronize the store. Some clients have also moved away, but continue to rely on the store.
“We have customers in Michigan, Ohio, Florida. They feel comfortable with us and have complete trust in us,” Hochberg said. “That’s what keeps us going.”
“Quality and high standards” set the store apart, according to Hochberg. “We have a complete repair department,” remodeling and design and giftware department, in addition to handcrafted Christmas ornaments.
Hochberg said his children may not take over the business, so he vows to “keep working and try to make it 100-plus years.”
The store can be reached at 203-261-5005, and its Website is hochbergjewelers.com.
