In the winter, Trumbull's Vietnam Memorial is shoveled out. In spring and summer, the flowers are maintained.
But its caretaker is humble.
Richard Fattibene, a U.S. Navy veteran, is the mystery man, said Tom Lee, a Vietnam veteran. Lee spoke at a ceremony at the memorial Monday.
He noted that it's the 40th anniversary of the removal of U.S. troops from Vietnam.
"Time just passes so quickly. [I] thought we'd never be involved in a conflict like this again," he said.
In January, the Town Council honored Fattibene. "During the dry summers you can see him bringing buckets of water up from the river to water the plants. Recently you may have seen him shoveling the snow around the memorial so people could go to visit the memorial. Richard is a very unassuming individual; he does this because he is a committed veteran and member of our community," said Council Chairman Carl Massaro Jr.
