VERNON, CT — It took quite the effort for emergency crews to extinguish a large tree fire in Vernon.

The fire broke out at about 3 a.m. Thursday in the area of Harlow Street and Union Street.

Crews from Vernon and Ellington encountered a dead, 50-foot tree actively on fire and it was dropping hot embers on dry grass, causing a small brush fire with "multiple exposures," fire officials said.

More than 5,000 gallons of water were used to extinguish the fire over the course of three hours, fire officials said.

No injuries were reported.
