VERNON, CT — It's true that Tuesday's public unveiling of the new and improved Citizens Block in Downtown Rockville was a good photo op for town officials, politicians and a few members of the public. After all, it's not often a town gets to turn a circa 1879 building into a new municipal office complex that completes a one-stop shopping concept for residents along a single sidewalk.

But after the ribbon was cut and the congratulatory handshakes subsided, the true impact of the renovation was felt, particularly when it comes to the Probate Court and the Vernon Youth Services department.

"This is amazing. We're not cramped anymore. We can finally spread out and make things comfortable for those we serve," Probate Judge Elisa Bartlett said.

She was not shy about showing things off. The court was indeed at somewhat cramped quarters at Vernon Town Hall, but now has a sparkling new courtroom, office spaces, a comfortable waiting area, a place for all forms and a conference area.

It looks genuinely like a real courthouse within the building.

Over the past several years, youth services has bounced around several locations. Youth Services director Michelle Hill said larger activity areas, dedicated office space and a work room with computers at the Citizens Block will make things much more comfortable.
