Town Of Vernon: 2025 Leaf Season Guide

VERNON, CT — It's officially leaf season in Vernon.

Leaf collection will begin on Monday Nov. 3. All leaves should be raked to the curb by this date to ensure collection.

Department of Public Works officials said that residents should not be alarmed if DPW crews are seem on streets before the date. Crews will be testing the vacuum equipment and training laborers.

All streets in the Town of Vernon have been divided into three groups. Group A streets will be collected and completed first before leaf crews move onto Group B streets and so on.

THE RULES

The program is dependent on weather. Under good conditions, crews expect to complete a group of streets in 7 to 10 business days. Rain, snow or freezing temperatures will delay the program. All streets are guaranteed at least one pass. If time permits, DPW crews will make a second pass. Residents are at their own risk whether to wait for a second pass or bag their leaves. Residents should not rake leaves into the street or onto the sidewalk. It creates a safety and flooding hazard as well as a violation of Ordinance No. 235, Sec. 7-20 and is punishable by a fine of $100, officials said.

Leaf bins are open and are located at the Nye Street Firehouse (off West Street) and the Church Street parking lot and at Legion Field (off Regan Road at rear of parking lot)

Deposit leaves in the areas provided.

Bins are for leaves only — grass clippings, branches, garden waste or brush are allowed. Contamination caused by disposal of any other type of yard waste, household waste or bulky items will result in the leaf bin being shut down. Residents must remove the container used to transport leaves. Plastic bags can be left in the trash barrel. Lawn sized paper bags are biodegradable and do not need to be emptied. Bagged leaves cannot be put out for collection with regular trash. A pickup for bagged leaves may be scheduled for the first two Fridays in December.

Residents can call the Public Works Office at 860-870-3500 to schedule. Only biodegradable paper bags will be collected.

A pause on the bulky waste program will commence the week of Nov. 9 and continue through mid-December or until leaf collection is complete.
