VERNON, CT — The scene at a Vernon hardware store parking lot Thursday wasn't one of those traveling snake oil salesmen from the wild west.

These are ... the meats.

That's right, a traveling butcher shop has rolled into Vernon for a few days.

The business is called Backyard Butchers. It is based in San Antonio, Texas, and operates 16 trucks that travel across the country. One of those trucks was parked at the Rocky's Ace Hardware store in Vernon Thursday. The company worked out an arrangement with the hardware store's home office. staffers said.

Backyard Butchers offers steaks that include T-bones, "San Antonio Strips," ribeyes, burgers and "ranch pepper" strips. The seafood line includes crab and shrimp and the chicken line includes a variety of flavors.

The food is flash-frozen and transported via a freezer truck, staffers said.

The truck is anticipated to remain at the parking lot through Monday, or while supplies last.
