VERNON, CT — The Vernon Town Council Thursday was to begin the review process for Mayor Dan Champagne's $107.4 million budget proposal for the 2025-26 fiscal year.

The process will culminate at the April 22 annual town meeting.

Bottom Line

  • The budget totals $107,482,466

Taxpayer-Funded Increase

  • The increase to be paid for by taxes is $3,152,215. The driving factors are education, employee salaries and benefits and insurance costs.

Tax Revenue

  • The grand list of taxable property went up by $12,218,351, or 0.51 percent.

Capital Improvement

  • The capital line item totals $1,826,248 and is to be paid for by reserve funds.

Education

  • The education budget forwarded to the council totals $60,419,570. The driving force behind the 2.79 percent increase is health insurance costs.

Tax Rate

  • If endorsed by the council as-is, the budget will require a tax rate of 36.09 mills, or a full mill more than the current rate. That is an increase of 2.85 percent. The motor vehicle tax rate is capped at 32.46 mills.
