
After Vernon battled back to tie Rocky Hill at 5 – 5 by scoring three runs in the bottom of the 4th inning on Tuesday, Rocky Hill pulled away by outscoring Vernon 8 – 2 over the final two innings to win a Little League tournament gamer 13–7 in East Lyme.
The loss completed Vernon’s 11/12 tournament season with a Connecticut Section 2 Pool Play record of 2–3.
Rocky Hill jumped on top with a run in the top of the first, but Vernon responded to tie the score as Chelsea Chatterton, who had walked to lead off the bottom of the first, ultimately scored on a passed ball.
Rocky Hill responded with three runs in the top of the second before Tiffany Cosgrove cut the deficit to two by drilling a double to left to drive in Monica Bolduk, who had just singled and advanced to second on a stolen base.
Vernon was able to load the bases with two out, but Rocky Hill escaped the inning with no additional runs.
After Rocky Hill scored one run in the top of the third, Vernon was scoreless in the bottom of third, leaving runners stranded on second and third.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Vernon scored three runs on two-run single by Sarah Silver that drove in both Tiffany Cosgrove and Shannon Skivington, who had reached base on walks, and a Rocky Hill error. Silver eventually scored in the inning to tie the score at 5 -5.
Rocky Hill scored three runs in the fifth and then sent 10 players to the plate in the sixth while scoring five runs.
Vernon was unable to pull out any late-game heroics and mustered one run in both the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, Sarah Moss raced home on a passed ball and in the sixth, Sarah Silver scored Vernon’s final run after reaching base on an error.
Rocky Hill pitchers struck out four Vernon batters and allowed 4 hits.
Overall, the District 8 Champions finished Section 2 Pool Play with a 2 – 3 record and overall postseason tournament record of 6–4. Vernon was led by Manager Rob Silver.
