VERNON — There are just a couple weeks left to virtually participate in a fundraiser to help a local mental health services agency serve its clients during these difficult times.

The Vernon-based Hockanum Valley Community Council's annual walk-a-thon fundraiser is taking place all May, which also happens to be Mental Health Awareness Month.

As part of the event, participants make financial pledges for the HVCC and then walk, bike or hike their way to help, doing so on their own time and own locations.

In addition to mental health services, the HVCC aids clients suffering from food insecurity and/or a lack of transportation to vital appointments such as doctor's visits.

According to the registration page, the difficult times afflicting the country and world in recent years, from pandemics, wars and economic and political conflicts, have placed a premium on mental health services.

"Mental Health Awareness Month is one of the most important times of the year for HVCC and our mission," reads the announcement. "The last two years have been incredibly hard on everyone and instances of mental health, substance abuse and domestic violence issues have risen all over the country. For over 50 years, HVCC has had a mission to ensure basic needs are met and to meet the treatment needs of those struggling with their mental health."
