Obituary: Rafael "Ralph" Angel Mercado, 83, of Wallingford

Ralph, as he was known to his friends, lived in Wallingford for 70 years, was an avid Red Sox fan and was heavily involved in the community.

WALLINGFORD, CT - (From Wallingford Funeral Home) Rafael Angel Mercado, 83, of Wallingford, died Friday, December 10, 2021 at MidState Medical Center.

He was born in Puerto Rico, October 8, 1937, a son of Santana Mercado and Camila Garcia Cortes.

“Ralph” as he was known to his friends lived in Wallingford for 70 years and was an avid Red Sox fan.

He coached the Spanish Club Team in the Wallingford Softball League for many years. Ralph was not a veteran but had many friends who were members of the V.F.W. Post # 591 where they welcomed him to the organization.

He regarded them as his best friends.

Ralph was predeceased by his wife Margaret “Peggy” Mercado; and his first wife, Lydia Mercado and their infant daughter, Sylvia Elizabeth Mercado.

Brothers, Joseph, Jesus, Manuel, Candido and Sister Paulina. He is survived by his siblings, Marcelina Garcia, Ada L. Martinez, Herbert Mercado, wife Betty, Lucy Dombroski, husband Ted and Norma Ramos husband Gabe, and many loving nieces and nephews, also son, Rafael A. Mercado Jr., wife Laura and his grandsons whom he adored, Giovanni and Julian.
