Noah Webster House Hosts CT State Spelling Bee

This year's competition includes 37 students from 27 towns across the state and will take place at University Of St. Joseph's.

State Spelling Bee Hosted in His Hometown The Connecticut Spelling Bee Sponsored by the Noah Webster House & West Hartford Historical Society, the Hartford Courant, and the University of Saint Joseph Connecticut’s Best Spellers Will Compete to Represent the State in National Competition in Washington D.C.

The Noah Webster House & West Hartford Historical Society will co-present a state-wide spelling bee with the nation’s oldest continuously published newspaper, the Hartford Courant, hosted by the University of Saint Joseph in West Hartford.

This year’s competition includes 37 students from 27 towns across the state. Participating students in grades 4 through 8 have already won their school- or town-wide spelling bees.

The Connecticut Spelling Bee is the last step on the path to the Scripps National Spelling Bee. The overall winner of the state competition will receive a $1,000 scholarship from the University of Saint Joseph and represent Connecticut on the national stage near Washington, D.C.

It’s a fitting tribute to West Hartford-born Webster: his 1828 American Dictionary of the English Language is the original source for today’s Merriam-Webster Dictionary. Merriam-Webster serves as the final authority for the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

The Scripps National Spelling Bee was founded on the principles of celebrating words and inspiring new generations of readers. Spellers engaging in the Spelling Bee tradition are intimately familiar with both etymology and current language trends.

The Connecticut Spelling Bee will take place at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at the University of Saint Joseph’s Hoffman Auditorium, 1678 Asylum Avenue, West Hartford, CT 06117. Space is limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. This event is free to the public.

WHEN/WHERE: Saturday, March 25, 2017

  • 9:30 a.m. The Connecticut Spelling Bee will take place in the University of Saint Joseph’s Hoffman Auditorium, 1678 Asylum Avenue, West Hartford, CT 06117. The Bee will begin at 9:30 a.m. and last until one winner remains – probably about 2 ½ hours in duration.
  • 12:00 p.m. After The Connecticut Spelling Bee concludes, media is welcome to interview the spellers, including the top speller, who will represent the state at Scripps National Spelling Bee in May 2017.
