Webster House A Happening Place In West Hartford This Summer

A summer full of activities at the prominent historical site kicks off Saturday, June 14, with free admission all day.

WEST HARTFORD, CT — An eventful summer at West Hartford's most historic site kicks off Saturday, June 14, with free admission to the Noah Webster House.

The Noah Webster House & West Hartford Historical Society will offer free admission from 1 to 4 p.m. that day to celebrate Connecticut Open House Day, where state historical sites and museums are all free.

In addition to free crafts and games, guests can enjoy the opening of the museum's brand-new exhibit: "Flags of the Republic," featuring more than 30 rare and historic American flags.

The museum is located at 227 S. Main St., West Hartford, and it commemorates the birthplace and home of Noah Webster, the famed educator and language specialist who many say refined the modern English language (as in 'Webster's Dictionary ').

Saturday's special event, however, is just the first of many events at the Webster House coming up this summer.

Other special days include:

• "Every Timepiece Tells A Story," Wednesday, June 25, 6 p.m.: A presentation on the clock and watchmaking industries of Connecticut's past.

Two Noah Webster-related timepieces will be featured, including Webster’s New Haven-made tall case clock and a pocket watch (c. 1825) on loan to the museum that was gifted from Noah to his son William.

• "Blues 101: The History of Blues Music in America," Wednesday, July 2, 6 p.m.: An all-ages program presenting classic blues pieces played on authentic vintage instruments interspersed with historical images, video, and educational material.

• "The Original Promise of America - All Men Are Created Equal," Thursday, July 10, 6:30 p.m.: Kick off the year-long countdown to America250 with "The Original Promise of America- All Men Are Created Equal."

This event is free for all, and advance registration is required.

•"Early American Adventure Camp": Space is still available for the museum's full-day summer camp.
