Boiler Catches Fire at Lees Lane Home, Put out Before Firefighters Arrive

An icy gas meter appeared to have been the cause. The Fire Department urges homeowners to get their heating systems checked annually.

A homeowner on Lees Lane used a fire extinguisher Thursday morning to put out a fire near the boiler, then called the Westport Fire Department, which determined that an icy gas meter was the cause, according to a report on NBC Connecticut.

The gas meter was icy from a broken gutter dripping water on it, and the pressure regulator was encased in ice, fire officials said, according to the television station’s report. They turned off the gas, which the homeowner said didn’t appear to be working properly anyway.

A fire inspector and gas company worker arrived at the home to make sure gas service could be restored safely.
