Contracts Approved for New Levitt Project in Westport

Westport’s Board of Selectman unanimously approved contracts for the architect and the contractor that will complete the new Levitt Pavilion project.

The project, which is scheduled to take nine months, will begin in late September and be completed prior to the next performance season at the end of June 2013. The actual construction cost to build the new facility is $6,128,000.

The contractor, Leggette, Brashears & Graham, Inc., will direct all activities during the course of the project, including the construction that will be done by Verdi Construction. Leggette, Brashears & Graham will be in charge of resolving potential contamination issues as the site sits on a former landfill.

“We do anticipate methane obviously, but we do not anticipate any hazardous materials,” said Stuart McCarthy, Director of Westport’s Parks and Recreation Department.

The firm worked on the nearby library site during the original construction and the renovation and is very familiar with the location, McCarthy said.

“They are confident this should run smoothly,” he said.

The board also approved a contract for architect Peter Cadoux, who has worked with Verdi Construction on a previous project at Long Shore Club Park in the past. His base fee was $367,680, plus addition consultant fees.

“This project is very design heavy,” McCarthy said, adding that the amount of consultants involved is quite staggering because of issues related to the landfill, and environmental monitoring.

There are also lighting, stage and sound consultants involved in the project.
