Suspected School 'Swatting' Incident Investigated By Westport Police
Greens Farms Elementary School was temporarily placed on "shelter in place" status Friday afternoon as a precaution.
WESTPORT, CT — A suspected "swatting" incident was investigated by Westport police at Greens Farms Elementary School on Friday afternoon, which led to the school being placed briefly on "shelter in place" status.
No injuries were reported, and the threat was deemed "not valid" after "officers conducted a thorough investigation" of the school.
Westport Superintendent of Schools Thomas Scarice said that the district was told by authorities "that there were at least four other false reports made to schools and police departments around the state."

"I arrived at [Greens Farms Elementary School] shortly after the call was made and was greeted by 6 [Westport Police] officers, including the Deputy Chief," Scarice said in a statement. "Additional officers were assigned across the entire school district for the remainder of the day as a precaution.
"I want to recognize and thank the [Westport Police Department] for their rapid response, and I want to thank the administration and faculty of [Greens Farms Elementary School] for their responsive actions."

According to Westport Police Lt. Eric Woods, swatting "refers to the act of making a false report to emergency services with the intent of causing a large-scale police response."
Woods added, "While [Friday's] threat was determined to be unfounded, the Westport Police Department implemented precautionary measures out of an abundance of caution. Officers were stationed at all schools in the district until dismissal to ensure the safety of students, faculty, and staff, as well as to provide reassurance to the community.
"The Westport Police Department takes all threats seriously, regardless of their validity, and will continue to work closely with local organizations, school administrators, and law enforcement partners to address these incidents and prevent disruptions to public safety. Swatting not only diverts critical emergency resources but also causes unnecessary fear and anxiety within the community.
"The safety and security of our community remain our highest priorities, and we appreciate the cooperation and understanding of our residents as we respond to these situations."
